Event MC and cultural advocate, MC Portfolio, has expressed concern over what he describes as an inferiority complex undermining the progress of musicians in Kumasi.
Speaking at the Rapperholic Seminar in Kumasi, he noted that despite the Ashanti Region being home to immense talent, many artistes from the city are made to feel like second-class players in Ghana’s music industry.
“Many artists in the Ashanti Region struggle to receive the recognition they deserve, not just from fans and industry stakeholders, but from themselves,” he observed.
Portfolio pointed out double standards in media coverage, stressing that artistes from Kumasi are frequently identified by their location rather than their craft.
“In Kumasi, even when creatives release works on a national scale, they are still labelled as ‘Kumasi artistes.’ Meanwhile, when an Accra-based artiste puts out a project, it is their name that headlines the story, not their location,” he said.
He argued that Kumasi musicians must be valued for their creativity and merit, adding that some outperform their Accra counterparts but still go underappreciated.
Portfolio concluded with a call for a mindset shift within the industry, insisting that rewriting the narrative is the first step to ensuring Kumasi’s music scene earns the respect it deserves.
