The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College has begun a four-day operational study visit to the Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region as part of efforts to expose military officers to real-world security dynamics.
The field exercise, which runs until Wednesday, March 11, 2026, involves participants from Senior Staff Course 47 who are currently undergoing advanced professional training at the college.
According to the institution, the exercise is designed to connect academic instruction with practical operational experience by allowing officers to observe and assess internal security operations while interacting with civil authorities in a complex environment.
Officials explained that the initiative forms part of the college’s broader mandate to develop senior and mid-level officers capable of evaluating intricate security situations and providing informed military advice at both operational and strategic levels.
The Nkwanta South Municipality was selected for the study because of persistent security concerns in the area. These include communal tensions, chieftaincy disagreements, and disputes over land ownership, issues that have, at various times, required the involvement of the Ghana Army to support local authorities in maintaining peace and stability.
Leading the delegation, Colonel Raymond Quartey, Chief Instructor of the Alpha Division of the Army Faculty at the college, explained that the programme is being conducted under the theme: “Strengthening Military Aid to Civil Authority/Internal Security Operations in the Oti Region: Enhancing Readiness, Coordination, and Responsiveness for National Development.”
He noted that the visit will allow participants to study the underlying factors fueling conflicts in the municipality while reviewing the impact and effectiveness of ongoing security interventions by the military.
Colonel Quartey added that the officers will also examine how command and control structures operate among different security institutions and evaluate the nature of civil–military relations within the municipality.
Through the application of tactical assessment methods to real-life situations, the participants are expected to develop recommendations that could strengthen operational performance and improve conflict management strategies in the area.
Welcoming the delegation, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, expressed appreciation to the leadership of the college for selecting the municipality for the academic engagement.
He indicated that the exercise could generate useful insights into the area’s security challenges and help support efforts aimed at achieving long-term peace, which remains essential for economic growth and business development.
Mr. Awal also assured the visiting officers of the Assembly’s cooperation throughout their stay, stressing that the partnership between local authorities and the military training institution would benefit both the academic exercise and the stability of the municipality.
