Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has insisted that Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s controversial report on illegal mining implicates the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) far more than the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, September 20, Mr. Aboagye dismissed NDC criticisms of the government’s handling of galamsey, arguing that the very report they rely on exposes their own party’s deeper ties to the menace.
“The report is clear. It says there are far more NDC people engaged in illegal mining. So if Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s report is what they want us to work with, then indeed it shows that the NDC has far more involvement than the NPP,” he said.
Citing the Report
Referring to page 13 of the former Environment Minister’s document, Mr. Aboagye stressed that the NDC was alleged to have benefited more from access to resources linked to galamsey than the ruling party.
“Professor Frimpong-Boateng says the NDC was given an advantage in terms of access to resources from mining. This is because there are far more NDC people engaged in illegal mining than NPP members. This is in his report,” he emphasised.
Political Accountability
The Bawumia campaign spokesperson maintained that if the report is to be treated as a fair standard, then the NDC has no moral authority to present itself as the cleaner alternative.
“If the report is the yardstick, then the NDC has no business being in office, because it indicts them more than it does the NPP,” Mr. Aboagye argued.
His comments add another twist to the ongoing political tussle over Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s galamsey revelations, which continue to spark heated exchanges between Ghana’s two major parties.
