The Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has urged the government to ditch public relations theatrics and take bold, results-driven action to tackle the growing menace of illegal mining (galamsey).
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, October 4, Mr. Aboagye expressed frustration over what he described as “empty praise-singing” and “gaslighting” of Ghanaians by some government officials who recently claimed progress in the fight against galamsey.
“If the President is watching, or anybody responsible is watching, they should freeze and pause all the PR attempts and confront the issues. We are in a deep crisis,” he said.
He warned that the situation has worsened over the past 10 months, insisting that government must abandon old strategies and adopt a transparent, radical approach to rebuild public trust and protect Ghana’s environment.
“Right now, the entire country is ready to rally behind them. The last thing we want is PR and claims that everything is fine when we know it’s not,” he stressed.
Mr. Aboagye also took aim at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and the government’s gold purchasing arrangements, arguing that these systems indirectly support galamsey by providing ready markets for illegally mined gold.
“Stop buying gold from galamseyers. You’re enabling the problem when the state becomes the market. Today, it’s even easier to sell illegal gold because agents are picking it up in the villages,” he said.
He further cautioned that the government’s current stance is “fuelling the very crisis it seeks to solve,” urging leadership to back rhetoric with decisive, measurable action to end the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.
