The Miss University of Ghana pageant has been in the news recently after allegations surfaced that the reigning Miss Legon was misled with a faulty car prize. Guru, the founder of the pageant, has now shared his side of the story, offering a detailed account of what went wrong.
“The original plan for the pageant was that the winner would receive a cash prize and a fully paid trip to Dubai. Later, we verbally discussed adding a brand-new car,” Guru explained. “But COVID-19 forced us to suspend the contest. Sponsors pulled out, and the school only had GH₵10,000 to run the entire program. That left us with no choice but to switch to a used car.”
He highlighted that the contest rules had also been modified due to the pandemic. “Initially, it was 60% voting and 40% performance. After COVID, we changed it to 40% voting and 60% performance, to accommodate the challenges,” Guru said.
When asked about complaints from the queen regarding the car’s condition, Guru said, “I bought the car three days before the event, and I personally checked it. There was nothing wrong. When the queen reported problems a month or two later, we invited the dealer to inspect the car. He confirmed it was sold in good condition.”
The dealer reportedly discovered that the queen’s boyfriendand friends had been driving the car recklessly, treating it like a sports car. “That’s not what the car was made for,” Guru said. “If the car’s strength reduced, it was because of the way it was used.”
Throughout the ordeal, Guru emphasized that he has been acting in the queen’s interest. “All along, I was representing her. We offered to either repair the car or refund the money. The claims of a ‘scam’ are entirely misleading,” he added.
The case sheds light on the logistical and financial difficulties that pageants faced during the pandemic, as well as the importance of clear communication regarding prizes. Guru’s detailed account suggests that miscommunication, rather than deception, may have fuelled the controversy.
