Tweneboa Kodua, reporting on Angel FM in Kumasi, has reported the tragic drowning of a mother and her three children in an abandoned galamsey pit at Wassa Dunkwa.

According to the report, the family had gone in search of firewood to use as fuel for cooking. They initially collected some wood and placed it by the roadside before returning to gather the remaining pieces from around the galamsey site, which was located close to the road.

“They went in search for firewood to use as fuel to cook something to eat. The area they went to was a galamsey site,” Kodua said.

The three children told their mother that they wanted to wash off some dirt before joining her to carry the firewood home, and she agreed. After waiting for some time and noticing that the children had not returned, the mother went to check on them and found them struggling in the water. She attempted to rescue them but was unable to, and all four drowned.

“The mother went into the water to save her children, but she couldn’t and they all drowned,” the reporter added.

The person who accompanied the family to the site ran back to the community to alert residents. By the time help arrived, all four victims had perished.
