A joint taskforce from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested a notorious galamsey operator in the Eastern Region following a raid on an illegal mining site at Bisasi in the Ayensuano District.

The operation, conducted on November 9, 2025, targeted activities that had blocked and polluted the Ayensu River, posing severe environmental risks to nearby communities and aquatic life.

According to environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor of the Multimedia Group, the suspect, described as a “well-known galamsey kingpin,” confronted the NAIMOS team armed with a pistol. In an attempt to evade arrest, he allegedly offered the officers GH¢100,000 in bribes, which were firmly rejected.

Authorities confiscated the cash, mining equipment, and immediately shut down the illegal site.

The suspect is now in police custody, assisting with investigations, while environmental experts conduct assessments to determine the full scale of damage to the Ayensu River and its surroundings.

NAIMOS officials reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal mining operations and protecting Ghana’s water bodies and natural resources.
