A swift dawn operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) sent suspected galamsey operators fleeing into nearby thickets, as officers descended on the well-known illegal mining base known as “Yellow Face” in Wassa Abrehyia in the Western Region.

The task force, acting on intelligence, launched the unannounced raid just before sunrise, catching dozens of miners off guard. Many abandoned their tools and bolted as security officers advanced on the camp.

By the end of the operation, improvised shelters had been demolished and several items believed to be used in illegal mining, including washing equipment, generators and makeshift processing tools, were destroyed. Officers also discovered worrying signs of widespread drug use, along with traces of dynamite believed to be used in blasting underground rock.

According to NAIMOS, the raid is part of a renewed offensive against illegal mining networks, especially those known for environmental destruction and rising cases of drug-related activity. The Secretariat says more coordinated strikes will roll out in the coming days to dismantle entrenched galamsey hubs and cut off the supply lines that keep them operating.

Officials reiterated that the fight against illegal mining will be relentless and sustained, stressing that the presence of hard drugs and explosives at such sites poses not only environmental harm but major security risks to surrounding communities.
