The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is claiming victory in the Akwatia parliamentary by-election, held on September 2, 2025. According to Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, Deputy Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Ada, the NDC will win with a large margin.
The by-election was triggered by the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the former MP for Akwatia constituency who won the seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in December 2024. Kumi garnered 19,279 votes, beating the NDC’s Henry Yiadom Boakye who secured 17,206 votes.
The NDC’s confidence in winning the by-election stems from their belief that their candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, will deliver development to the constituency. Ada MP Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe emphasized that the NDC government has demonstrated a focus on development, with MPs lobbying and delivering projects for their constituencies.
The NDC had previously disputed the declaration of Ernest Yaw Kumi as the MP-elect for Akwatia constituency, citing inconsistencies in the results on the pink sheet. Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, a member of the NDC, claimed that the party would not accept the declaration, describing it as “illegal, unfounded, and non-existent”.
As of now, the final outcome of the by-election is still unfolding, but the NDC is optimistic about winning the seat. The party’s candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, won the NDC primary with 380 votes, defeating his closest contender, Erasmus Ali Korney, who secured 366 votes.
