Former Majority Leader of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Suame, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its approach to road infrastructure, arguing that the proposed Kumasi–Accra Expressway is unnecessary and could further harm Ghana’s already stressed agricultural sector.

Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu warned that the expressway would destroy scarce agricultural lands, especially at a time when large portions of fertile land have already been degraded through galamsey activities.

“The little land left for food production is now what they want to use for roads,” he said, stressing that the project would have serious agricultural consequences for communities along the corridor.

He further accused the NDC of neglecting major road projects across the country, noting that several roads are in very poor condition, with some becoming impassable barely a year after construction. According to him, rather than embarking on a new expressway, the government should focus on completing and maintaining existing road networks.

Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also criticised the abandonment of road projects initiated under previous administrations, including those started during the tenure of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and continued under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He argued that Ghana does not need a “super highway” but rather the continuation of strategic road diversions and expansions begun by past governments, which, in his view, would serve the same purpose as the proposed expressway without the extensive land destruction.

Additionally, the former Majority Leader expressed concern that the Kumasi–Accra Expressway could worsen traffic congestion in several towns along the route, instead of easing it.

He concluded by calling for a strong national focus on railway development, describing rail transport as a more sustainable and economically beneficial alternative to large-scale express road projects.

According to him, balanced sectoral development, not selective and disruptive infrastructure projects, is what the country urgently needs.
