Member of Parliament for Akuapem North and Senior Campaign Advisor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s team, Lawyer Sammi Awuku, has predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will face serious political disadvantages ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Awuku argued that the actions of the NDC government will ultimately work in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), forcing the opposition to unite early and reposition itself for a return to power.
“The NDC will be the most unpopular party before the 2028 elections. They will be at a disadvantage,” he stated. “I will be surprised if they can elect their presidential candidate before the last quarter of 2027.”
According to Awuku, the continuous investigations into appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo signal a deliberate attempt to criminalise the previous administration, even in cases where no wrongdoing exists.
“Every appointee under former President Akufo-Addo is being investigated. Where there is no problem, they want to find a problem,” he said.
He likened the current situation to events following the NDC’s return to power in 2009, which, he noted, triggered early unity within the NPP.
“They did the same thing in 2009, and it pushed our leaders to ensure early unity so we could return to power and clear any hidden agenda,” Awuku recalled. “They have started the same thing again.”
Awuku stressed that internal unity within the NPP would be restored once the party elects its presidential candidate on January 31.
“We just need to cross January 31. Once the presidential candidate is elected, he will make sure everyone in the party is united so we can get our act together,” he assured.
He further argued that the NDC’s challenges will be compounded by the absence of their most popular candidate on the 2028 ballot, coupled with delays in selecting a flagbearer.
“They will be at a disadvantage because their popular candidate will not be on the ballot, and their flagbearer will not have been chosen before the last quarter of 2027,” Awuku said. “They will be in the same situation we found ourselves in ahead of the 2024 elections.”
