The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has sworn into office the newly elected Members of Parliament for Akwatia and Tamale Central, Bernard Bediako Baidoo and Professor Alidu Seidu.

Both MPs, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were officially inducted on Tuesday, bringing the total number of sitting legislators to 276.

During the brief ceremony, the two lawmakers took the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of a Member of Parliament. Professor Seidu took his oath on the Qur’an, while Mr. Baidoo opted for the Bible.

Speaker Bagbin congratulated them and reminded them of their duty to serve the nation with integrity and diligence.

“I will hold you to the two oaths you have sworn,” he said, adding humorously that to perform their duties well, they would need “a hoe and a cutlass, the Constitution and the Standing Orders.”

His remarks drew laughter from the chamber as he urged them to study the key parliamentary documents thoroughly.

Mr. Baidoo won the Akwatia by-election with 18,199 votes following the death of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi. In Tamale Central, Professor Seidu was declared unopposed after the passing of Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
