Persons living with sickle cell disease in Ghana can now access free treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), thanks to sustained advocacy by the Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel).
The development follows a policy proposal submitted by FoSCel to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), calling for improved healthcare access for individuals with sickle cell disease.
FoSCel confirmed in a press statement on Friday that the NHIA has officially recognised the initiative, publishing it on its website and Facebook page.
“We are proud to confirm that the Government of Ghana has implemented this policy through the NHIS, making sickle cell treatment free for patients nationwide,” the statement read.
The Foundation described the milestone as a testament to the power of strong advocacy and collaboration, stressing its commitment to engage stakeholders to ensure persons living with sickle cell continue to receive quality care.
FoSCel expressed gratitude to partners and pledged to sustain efforts aimed at addressing the challenges facing individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease.
The policy shift marks a major step in Ghana’s healthcare system, potentially easing the financial burden on thousands of families while strengthening the fight against sickle cell disease nationwide.
