In an emotional recounting, Guru has shared vivid memories of his early days in the Ghanaian music scene, detailing his journey alongside the legendary Sarkodie. Their paths first crossed at Centre Maria, a pivotal location for budding MCs. It was there that Guru’s lyrical prowess earned him a spot on a major compilation project, a moment that would set the stage for his future collaborations.
Guru reminisced about the intense, creative environment where he, Sarkodie, EL, and Shatta Wale recorded tirelessly. “Every day, we were in the studio, cranking out five to six songs. In just one week, we’d have 40 to 60 tracks,” Guru noted, highlighting their dedication and the sheer volume of work they produced.
Despite their success in the studio, financial rewards were scarce. “We used to fight over a crate of Coke as our pay for shows,” Guru laughed, emphasizing how modest their compensation was. Their big break came at “Bless the Mic,” a renowned venue for rap battles. The duo’s performance was electrifying, winning over fans and earning them a reputation.
However, the promised financial incentives never arrived. Instead, their manager surprised them with Coke, Fanta, and pastries after one memorable performance. “It brings tears to my eyes,” Guru shared. “We were young, hungry, and all we had was our passion and the grace of God.”
