The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected an invitation from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to participate in a public hearing on proposed utility tariff adjustments for the 2025–2029 regulatory period.
In a statement dated October 6, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP said it found “no justification” for any discussions on tariff increases at a time when Ghanaians are struggling with high living costs and new taxes, including the recently introduced “Dumsor Levy.”
According to the party, the levy alone generates over GH¢575 million monthly, translating to more than GH¢5.7 billion annually, funds that could be used to support the operations of utility service providers instead of burdening consumers with further hikes.
The NPP also refuted claims that the proposed tariff adjustments are linked to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionality, describing such assertions as “palpably false.”
“The NPP finds this unacceptable and will use all legitimate means to resist any attempt to burden Ghanaians with astronomical increases in utility tariffs,” the statement concluded.
