Member of Parliament and Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Hassan Tamouli, has downplayed fears surrounding internal contests within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisting that vigorous competition has always been part of the party’s democratic culture.

Speaking on Newsfile hosted by Samson Lardy Anyenini on Saturday, January 24, 2026, during discussions on the NPP race, peace pact, and related concerns, Mr. Tamouli said internal frictions should not be mistaken for disunity.

“The choice of words of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sums it all up,” he noted. “The NPP has always been a party of contest, and most of our contests are vigorous.

Friends will contest for the same position and there will be frictions.” According to him, such tensions are temporary and do not threaten the party’s cohesion.

“We do all that, and after the contest, we unite and come back together as one party to implement our policies,” he stated.

Mr. Tamouli also addressed allegations of vote buying within party primaries, arguing that some claims fail to appreciate the logistical realities faced by delegates. “We normally support delegates with some form of transportation because of how far some of them come from. So giving them money should not be a reason to annul an election in the name of vote buying,” he explained.

He acknowledged, however, that challenges sometimes arise in managing expectations. “We have difficulties sometimes because delegates expect a uniform amount, even though some

of them live close by,” he added.

Mr. Tamouli urged political observers and party members to distinguish between legitimate

logistical support and actual electoral malpractice, stressing that internal democracy must be

protected without undermining fairness and transparency.
