A political analyst, Prof. Lawrence Lowell, has argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), based on historical patterns and internal party dynamics, is not fully prepared for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become President of Ghana.

Speaking on Oyerepa Radio, Prof. Lowell said his conclusion was drawn from a situational analysis of how the party has historically handled leadership transitions and internal contests.

“Doing a situational analysis, the NPP as a party is not ready for Dr. Bawumia to become president,” he stated.

He explained that within the NPP’s history, party executives have often acted decisively to protect candidates they were fully committed to by discouraging internal competition.

Prof. Lowell recalled that during former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s era, several individuals expressed interest in contesting, with Akufo Addo emerging as his strongest challenger. However, party executives prevailed on others to allow Kufuor to contest on the NPP ticket.

He added that a similar approach was adopted during former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s time, when party leaders encouraged Alan Kyerematen to step aside in order to maintain party unity.

“If Alan had been allowed to contest at that time, it could have created serious problems for the party,” he noted, adding that the executives stood firm in their decision, which eventually contributed to the party’s electoral success.

Prof. Lowell questioned why a similar level of executive support and strategic protection was not extended to Dr. Bawumia.

“If that was the approach of the NPP in the past, why did they not do the same for Dr. Bawumia?” he asked.

During the discussion, the host of the breakfast show challenged his assertion that former President Akufo-Addo went uncontested. In response, Prof. Lowell clarified his position.

“At the very least, there was clear executive backing and consensus in his favour, which helped him win,” he explained.

According to Prof. Lowell, the absence of such unified executive support for Dr. Bawumia signals deeper internal hesitation within the party regarding his leadership.
