The Deputy Spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, has dismissed claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is an ethnically exclusive party, describing such assertions as a misconception that distorts the party’s core values.
While acknowledging that a significant number of NPP members are from the Ashanti Region, Dr. Amoakoh stressed that the party’s foundation goes beyond regional identity. “It is true that many NPP members are from Ashanti, but it is a misconception to say the party is exclusively for Ashantis. The NPP is built on broader principles, not just regional identity,” she stated.
She emphasized that the party’s focus ahead of its internal and national contests is competence and leadership capacity. According to her, support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is rooted in his ability to deliver, not where he comes from. “Dr. Bawumia is competent and has a good vision for the country,” she said.
Dr. Amoakoh noted that the collective agenda of party members is to present a leader who can unite and lead effectively. “The agenda of all NPP members is that we want someone who is capable and can lead the party. We need someone who can do the job, and Dr. Bawumia is that person,” she added.
She concluded by urging party faithful and the wider public to focus on leadership qualities, vision, and competence, rather than reducing Ghana’s politics to ethnic or regional narratives.
