Ghanaian politician and legal practitioner Nana Obiri Boahen has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was “fortunate” to have lost the 2024 general election, arguing that the high level of public anger at the time could have created serious challenges had the party retained power.

Speaking in an interview on Angel FM, the former NPP Deputy General Secretary said widespread frustration, driven largely by unemployment and economic hardship, made the political environment volatile.

“If the unemployment rate in the country is high, the people get angry,” he said. “It was good the NPP lost the election because the level of anger of the people was high. If they had won, things would have gone wrong.”

Obiri Boahen also criticised the party’s handling of the controversial National Cathedral project, describing the intention to commit public funds to it as a major misjudgement.

“How could they intend to use taxpayers’ money for a National Cathedral?” he asked. “It was supposed to be funded by private entities.”
