Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has argued that it is misleading to describe Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the sole founder of Ghana.

In an interview, Dr. Boakye-Danquah acknowledged Nkrumah’s significant contributions to Ghana’s independence but stressed that the country’s liberation was the result of collective effort. “In a strict sense, Ghana does not have a founder. It was a group of people who came together and contributed to securing independence for the country in 1957,” he said.

He suggested that while Ghana should have a day to celebrate Nkrumah as the nation’s first president, it should not conflate that recognition with the idea of him being the lone founder. “Ghana’s development is shaped by a shared national identity rather than the vision of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah alone,” Dr. Boakye-Danquah added.

The remarks have sparked discussion about how the history of Ghana’s independence is commemorated and how the contributions of multiple figures can be appropriately acknowledged alongside Nkrumah’s legacy.
