A 35-year-old nurse, Esther Asamoah Dufie, has been released on GH₵100,000 bail with two sureties by the Asante Akropong District Court after being charged with defrauding a colleague of over GH₵54,000.
The court, presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Wiafe Adu, scheduled her next appearance for November 27. Dufie pleaded not guilty to the charges of defrauding by false pretence.
According to the prosecution, Dufie allegedly lured her colleague, Ruth Afia Antwiwaa, and a friend’s husband with a supposed travel opportunity to the United Kingdom advertised on her WhatsApp status in January 2025. She claimed the opportunity came through her brother, who she said was a military officer in the UK.
Both victims transferred a combined sum of GH₵54,090 into a CalBank account provided by Dufie. She had promised to facilitate the dependents’ visa process in April 2025 but failed to deliver. Repeated attempts to retrieve the money proved futile, prompting the complainant to report the matter to Abuakwa Police on September 16, 2025.
Dufie initially admitted the offence in a caution statement and requested more time to refund the money by October 10. She was granted police enquiry bail but absconded, only to be rearrested at Tafo on October 27.
Following further investigations, she was formally charged and brought before the court, where she now awaits trial.
