The Divisional Chief of Gwira Banso in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region, Nana Ette Akrade II, has rewarded five residents with GH₵50,000 for their courageous role in arresting illegal miners operating in the Gwira Banso Forest Reserve.

Illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, has caused severe destruction to Ghana’s rivers, forests, and farmlands, prompting calls for traditional leaders to play a more active role in curbing the menace.

By recognising the residents, Nana Ette Akrade II underscored his commitment to protecting the environment and safeguarding the community’s future. He also warned that anyone caught engaging in mining activities within rivers or forest reserves would face the full rigour of the law.

The five residents, who handed the illegal miners over to the authorities, expressed appreciation for the chief’s recognition. They pledged to step up community efforts in the fight against galamsey but appealed for more logistical support to sustain the campaign.

The arrested suspects are currently in police custody.
