Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed suggestions that Ghana has gained financially or materially from its agreement with the United States to accept some West African deportees.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, September 15, Mr Ablakwastressed that the arrangement was not motivated by profit.
“It is important to state that Ghana has not received any money, compensation or any material benefit in relation to this understanding. Our decision is grounded purely on humanitarian grounds and principle,” he said.
His clarification follows rising public criticism after revelations that some Nigerian and Gambian nationals had been deported to Ghana under a U.S. deal, with opposition MPs accusing the government of compromising the country’s sovereignty.
Mr Ablakwa maintained that the agreement was carefully managed and aligned with international humanitarian standards. He assured citizens that the government’s priority remained the safety and dignity of Ghanaians while honouring the nation’s obligations within the international community.
The Foreign Affairs Minister further defended the government’s approach, insisting that Ghana’s sovereignty and security would not be compromised under any such arrangements.
This development has generated public debate, with many weighing the pros and cons of the government’s decision. Some argue that hosting deportees could stretch national resources, while others view it as a bold humanitarian step that strengthens regional solidarity.
Indeed, if thorough investigations prove that deportees pose no threat to national security, then Ghana extending a hand of support should not be seen as a weakness but as an act of African unity. After all, the African Union continues to champion a continent where nations support one another to live in peace and dignity. From this perspective, Ghana’s role could be a model of cooperation, although opinions will naturally differ on the matter.
