Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has taken aim at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over what he describes as needless delays in prosecuting former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for alleged economic crimes.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Gbande urged the OSP to work closely with international security agencies, particularly the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), to ensure accountability.

“If the OSP cannot work with the FBI to bring Ken Ofori-Atta to justice, then why should the FBI come to Ghana to take people to the U.S.?” he quizzed. “Ghanaians are extradited abroad for crimes, but when it comes to Ofori-Atta, the system suddenly goes quiet.”

Mr. Gbande accused the former minister of presenting himself as a victim while ordinary Ghanaians continue to bear the brunt of his economic decisions. He cited the controversial PDS scandal and the domestic debt exchange programme, which affected pensioners, as examples of his alleged poor leadership.

“Does anyone really believe Ken Ofori-Atta is innocent or that he treated Ghanaians fairly? Every scandal under President Akufo-Addo had Ofori-Atta’s fingerprints on it. He wasn’t just part of the problems; he supervised them,” Gbande charged.

The OSP has already declared Ofori-Atta wanted following several unsuccessful attempts to serve him with corruption-related summons. Authorities confirmed that no official medical records had been filed to justify his prolonged absence from Ghana.

Meanwhile, his wife, Angela Ofori-Atta, confirmed earlier that he had undergone a successful prostate cancer surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The robot-assisted procedure, which took place on June 13, lasted over four hours.
