Farmers across all nine districts and municipalities in the Oti Region have received a major boost to their operations with the distribution of 100 water pumping machines aimed at improving irrigation and food production.
The machines, presented by Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, are expected to support the cultivation of vegetables such as tomatoes, okra, cabbage, and carrots, contributing significantly to Ghana’s food security agenda.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Gyapong stressed the need for effective and responsible use of the equipment to maximize yields.
“The government remains committed to supporting our farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture. I personally understand the challenges of farming and want to see our farmers succeed,” he said.
The initiative, according to the Regional Minister, is not only meant to improve productivity but also to ensure that farmers can cultivate all year round despite changing rainfall patterns.
Municipal Chief Executive for Krachi West, Prosper Addo, praised the joint efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Oti Regional Coordinating Council. He pledged that Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) would closely monitor and supervise the use of the machines by farmer cooperatives to prevent misuse.
Mr. Addo also underscored the importance of the Oti River, describing it as a vital natural resource that, if fully harnessed, could drive agricultural growth and enhance the national food supply chain.
The distribution of the irrigation machines reflects the government’s wider commitment to empowering farmers, promoting sustainable practices, and reducing Ghana’s reliance on imported food crops.
