The Asantehene, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has rounded off months of mediation efforts aimed at resolving the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, following a face-to-face meeting between the rival factions at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi.

The meeting brought together two high-level delegations representing the Naayiri and Mamprugu on one hand, and the Bawku Naba and the Kusasi side on the other. Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of Tarana and spokesperson for the Naayiri, led a 30-member team that included chiefs, lawyers, academics, opinion leaders and youth representatives.

Representing the Bawku Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and the Kusasi people was a delegation led by the Paramount Chief of Pusiga, Naba Tambis Baalug. Former MP Hon. Cletus Avoka served as the spokesperson for the Kusasi delegation, with Dr. Issah speaking for the Naayiri and Mamprusi factions.

The Asantehene’s decision to bring both sides together came after several months of listening to their arguments separately. The face-to-face engagement was described as a final attempt to help both factions explore a sustainable pathway to lasting peace in the troubled Bawku traditional area.

According to the Manhyia Palace, the meeting was held in a cordial and mature atmosphere, with both sides acknowledging that they are “one people” who should not be at war with each other.

Otumfuo expressed his appreciation for the civility demonstrated by both groups and reminded them that regardless of the mediation outcome, they must learn to coexist peacefully as brothers and sisters. He urged the leadership of both factions to begin preparing their followers psychologically for an end to violence and disorder in their communities.

The Asantehene further announced that he would compile his findings and recommendations into a formal report to be submitted to President John Dramani Mahama within the next few days. He also expressed hope that the President would act swiftly by convening a broader meeting of all stakeholders to announce the final outcome of the mediation process.

The statement, signed by Manhyia Palace Chief of Staff Kofi Badu, was issued to all media houses on December 1, 2025.
