Authorities in the Awutu Senya West District have taken into custody a young couple following the gruesome discovery of their newborn baby, who was reportedly killed for suspected ritual purposes.
The Awutu Bereku District Police Command, under the leadership of Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, confirmed that the suspects, Abena Benewa (22) and Bright Ashiao (26), are facing investigation after the infant’s body was found abandoned in a refuse dump in the community of Awutu Bontrase.
Residents had grown concerned after noticing the baby had not been seen for several days. The child was reportedly delivered at home, and further alarm arose when the lifeless body was discovered with its head and left hand missing. The unusual condition of the body prompted immediate police intervention.
An eyewitness, Agyeman Otabil, recounted that when confronted, the father claimed the child had died naturally and was buried in the dump. However, inconsistencies between his account and statements made to local residents raised further suspicion.
Confirming the arrests, Prince Larbie, the Assemblyman for the Bontrase Electoral Area, stated that the couple remains in police custody while investigations continue. Superintendent Nyamekye added that the police suspect the father may have engaged in ritual activity involving the infant, as the investigation seeks to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
Authorities have appealed to community members to remain vigilant and report any unusual activities while the inquiry is ongoing.
