Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has been sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana. The ceremony took place on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the Jubilee House, where President John Dramani Mahama administered the oath of office.
His elevation follows parliamentary approval last week and comes after the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo by President Mahama. The swearing-in drew several prominent figures, including the Vice President, members of the Council of State, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, parliamentary leaders, Supreme Court justices, and members of the new Chief Justice’s family.
Addressing the gathering, President Mahama commended Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s wealth of experience and unwavering commitment to the rule of law. He urged the new Chief Justice to prioritise judicial independence and work toward reducing the long delays that have plagued the justice delivery system.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, after taking the prescribed oaths, outlined his vision for a revitalised Judiciary anchored on transparency, efficiency, and comprehensive institutional reforms. He pledged to safeguard public trust and strengthen the role of the courts as an impartial defender of rights and justice.
A Distinguished Journey to the Apex Court
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s rise to the highest judicial office crowns a remarkable legal career. He studied law at the University of Ghana before proceeding to Oxford University, where he earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Constitutional Theory.
He joined the bench in 1993 as a High Court judge, was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2005, and appointed to the Supreme Court in 2012. Over the years, he has built a reputation for deep constitutional insight and scholarly legal reasoning. At the Supreme Court, he authored 87 majority opinions, many of which shaped the nation’s jurisprudence on land conflicts, constitutional interpretation, and electoral justice.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s appointment is widely viewed as a stabilising force for the Judiciary at a time of institutional transition. His blend of academic depth, practical judicial experience, and reform-minded leadership places him at the centre of expectations for a fair, accessible, and efficient justice system.
The nation now looks to the new Chief Justice to steer the Judiciary toward renewed credibility and meaningful reform.
