The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has cautioned the party against settling on Kennedy Agyapong as its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, insisting that the outspoken MP lacks the national electoral experience and broad appeal needed to secure victory.
Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa, Yandoh argued that the NPP’s path to reclaiming political momentum requires a candidate with proven national visibility, a characteristic he believes only Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia possesses among the potential contenders. According to him, Bawumia’s participation in past national elections gives the NPP a strategic advantage that Kennedy Agyapong cannot match.
“From the analysis we have all done, if you take a candidate who has once been on the national ballot, the people become familiar with him and often give him another chance. But Kennedy Agyapong has never contested a national election, only internal ones,” Yandoh emphasized.
He maintained that in 2028, the race will not be about meeting President John Mahama. Instead, it will involve competing against a new NDC candidate for president, a structure he believes Br. Bawumia could give them victory.
Yandoh further suggested that the hype around Agyapong’s electability is fuelled by external forces who “want the NPP to make a mistake,” warning party members to stay focused on candidates with demonstrable national reach. “He cannot win the election for us. It is Dr. Bawumia who has the experience and the track record,” he insisted.
