Professor of Political Science and Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has raised concerns about whether key figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) still wield enough influence to ensure discipline among aspirants, despite the recent signing of a peace pact ahead of the party’s internal race.
Speaking on Newsfile hosted by Samson Lardy Anyenini on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Professor Gyampo described the former president’s address at the NPP race peace pact as characteristically strong but questioned its practical impact. “Clearly, the former president is known for great speeches, and that was typical of him on the day,” he said. “But whether the aspirants will pay heed to what he said is a different matter.”
He further questioned the extent of the former president’s authority within the party’s current dynamics. “As to whether he still has the weight and gravitas in the party to command listenership within and among the aspirants is something that needs to be looked at,” Professor Gyampo noted.
Despite these concerns, he acknowledged the symbolic value of the event. “What I saw on that day was good for the optics. Seeing old, seasoned politicians brought together to meet aspirants and to sign a peace pact was good,” he said.
However, Professor Gyampo suggested that the very need for such high-level intervention exposes deeper problems within the party. He questioned the long absence of senior party figures amid growing indiscipline, asking why these experienced politicians were not more visible earlier, given the current misconduct of some party members. “Sometimes I ask myself where all these big politicians have been, considering the conduct we are now seeing from some members of the party,” he observed.
He argued that the party may be addressing symptoms rather than root causes. “I feel there is an upside-down thinking. Since there is no good foundation, there should be rebranding and rejuvenation of their base to ensure that everything goes smoothly and to help them win the election,” he concluded
