New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has argued that governing a country cannot be equated to running a private business, stressing that political leadership demands character, wisdom, and moral discipline rather than commercial success.
Speaking in an interview on Pure FM, Ing. Agyepong rejected claims that business acumen alone qualifies an individual to lead a nation.
“Politics and running a government is not like business,” he said. “If governance were about business alone, then people like Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, or Daddy Lumba, if he were alive, would have been selected as leaders.”
According to him, leadership of a country requires a distinct set of values and competencies that go beyond wealth creation or entrepreneurial success.
“Running a government is not like running a personal business. We should stop saying that,” he stated.
Ing. Agyepong outlined the qualities he believes are essential for effective national leadership.
“A good president needs character, wisdom, patience, and respect. You need all these to be able to run a government,” he said.
To support his argument, the NPP flagbearer hopeful referenced Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, noting that his legacy was built on vision rather than business credentials.
“Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who laid the industrial foundation of this country, was not a businessman,” he said. “So we should stop making such claims.”
He further dismissed the notion that wealth should be the primary criterion for political leadership, using international examples to illustrate his point.
“If money was the qualification, then Dangote would have been president in Nigeria by now, or Bill Gates the president of the United States, or even Elon Musk. That is not how leadership works,” Ing. Agyepong argued.
