Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has clarified that the Presidency has not yet received the petition filed by Electoral Commission staffer Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, which seeks the removal of EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her two deputies.
The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP explained that petitions addressed to the President are normally routed through the Secretary to the President, who has not yet sighted this particular submission.
“Normally, it will go to the Secretary to the President if it is addressed to the President. I’ve engaged him. He has not sighted it yet, but there is a long-standing process that this goes through. Any information on that will be conveyed to the public in due course,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
When asked whether there are other petitions of a similar nature, he said he is not aware of any. He noted that should any additional petitions be filed and reach the Secretary’s office, the public would be informed, as was the case with the petition concerning the Chief Justice.
The Spokesperson emphasized that the government is committed to keeping citizens informed while ensuring that all constitutional processes are respected. “I only assumed my role ten months ago, and no one owns a public office. Those who occupy such positions use the mandate and resources of the people and must account for their actions,” he said.
He further added that if a petition is filed against any public office holder, it is only fair for the government to update the public about its receipt, the procedures involved, and the steps being taken. This, he said, prevents major decisions from appearing sudden or opaque.
Kwakye Ofosu concluded that transparency and accountability guide this practice, while noting that the government operates strictly within the confines of the law.
