The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament (MP)-elect for the Tamale Central Constituency.
His confirmation follows the withdrawal of other contenders, leaving him as the sole candidate for the seat. The EC explained that under Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 127, a candidate may be declared elected unopposed when, by the close of nominations, only one person stands validly nominated.
Initially, three candidates filed to contest the by-election. However, nominees from the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) later pulled out of the race. The Commission subsequently reopened nominations for 10 days, but no new aspirants came forward, paving the way for Prof. Seidu’s declaration.
The Returning Officer for Tamale Central, Muniru Musah, made the official announcement.
The by-election became necessary following the tragic death of the sitting MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who lost his life in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
Prof. Seidu expressed confidence ahead of his declaration, stating that he was certain of victory given the overwhelming support from the constituents and the unity within the NDC.
With this declaration, Prof. Seidu will represent the people of Tamale Central in the Eighth Parliament, continuing the work of his predecessor.
