Prof. Smart Sarpong, the Director of Research and Innovation at Kumasi Technical University, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to maintain Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate, warning that a change without a compelling reason could disrupt the party’s campaign momentum.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Prof. Sarpong explained that introducing a new running mate, even one with political experience, requires time to adjust to the electoral environment. He cautioned that replacing NAPO could slow down campaign efforts that are crucial at this stage.

Reflecting on past elections, he noted that the party delayed naming a running mate in the previous cycle, which affected campaign planning. He argued that the process of bringing a new deputy on board can be demanding and distract from essential voter engagement activities.

Prof. Sarpong advised that unless there are significant issues with NAPO, it would be more strategic for the campaign to continue with him. He added that guidance and support should be provided to address any challenges rather than changing the running mate.

“Switching deputies without a strong reason risks losing valuable time. If NAPO has performed satisfactorily, keeping him allows the campaign to remain focused and maintain consistent voter outreach,” Prof. Sarpong emphasized.
