In a significant development for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Seidu Alidu, a distinguished academic and former Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, has emerged victorious in the party’s parliamentary primary for the Tamale Central Constituency.
The primary election, held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, saw a total of 1,511 ballots cast, with Prof. Alidu securing 840 votes. This impressive tally allowed him to defeat 11 other aspirants, showcasing a strong support base within the constituency. Notably, only one ballot was rejected during the election process.
Prof. Alidu’s closest rival, Abdul Hanan Gundadoo, who previously served as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tamale, garnered 526 votes. The outcome not only underscores Prof. Alidu’s popularity but also positions him as a key contender in the upcoming by-election.
This victory is particularly poignant as it comes in the wake of the tragic passing of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the former Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency. Dr. Mohammed lost his life in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, along with seven others, creating a vacancy that Prof. Alidu is now poised to fill.
In a related political maneuver, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its withdrawal from the by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2025. The party stated that it will not field a candidate, a decision that could influence voter dynamics in the constituency.
Prof. Alidu’s candidacy is expected to generate significant interest in the upcoming by-election, as he aims to carry forward the legacy of the late Dr. Mohammed while addressing the needs and aspirations of the constituents.
As the political landscape in Tamale Central shifts, all eyes will be on the upcoming election and Prof. Alidu’s commitment to his community.
