The Ashanti Regional Manager of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Edward Boduah, has clarified that utility providers such as the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Ghana Water Limited do not have the authority to independently adjust tariffs.
Speaking on Angel FM Kumasi, Mr. Boduah emphasized that only PURC is legally mandated to determine and approve utility tariffs in the country.
“ECG and Ghana Water cannot adjust tariffs on their own. PURC provides the guidelines and has the sole mandate to do that, guided strictly by law,” he stated.
He explained that the Commission operates independently in its decision-making process, ensuring that tariff adjustments are not arbitrary but based on regulatory frameworks and established procedures.
According to him, beyond tariff setting, PURC also plays a critical oversight role by monitoring the performance of utility providers and safeguarding the interests of consumers.
“We monitor the standards of service delivery. We go to their offices to ensure that the required standards are maintained and that consumers receive the best possible service,” he noted.
Mr. Boduah added that the Commission serves as a neutral body that balances the interests of both utility providers and consumers.
“Both customers and the utility providers have interests, and our role is to ensure that these interests are fairly balanced so that all parties are satisfied,” he explained.
