The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says water treatment facilities operated by Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Western and Central Regions have shown major improvements in their operations and service delivery.

This was revealed in the Commission’s latest audit and inspection report, which was carried out between June 16 and June 27, 2025. The audit reviewed how well Ghana Water Limited has improved in treating, distributing, and managing water systems in both regions.

According to the PURC, the exercise was done in line with its legal mandate under the PURC Act of 1997 (Act 538), which requires the Commission to make sure that utilities like water and electricity are provided fairly, efficiently, and sustainably.

The audit focused on areas such as water intake and treatment, the condition of machines and electrical panels, water quality, safety measures, and the performance of boreholes and production units.

Key Findings

The report showed that the Western Region has made impressive progress in addressing old challenges that had affected operations in the past. The Commission praised the new Regional Chief Manager for showing strong leadership and taking practical steps to improve the system.

Most of the water treatment plants inspected were found to be in good working condition and capable of supplying clean water to consumers. The PURC said that overall, both the Western and Central Regions have recorded significant improvements since the last audit, which is a positive sign for Ghana’s water sector.

Recommendations

The Commission advised the government to support further improvements in the water sector by:

  • Implementing reforms to make water supply more efficient, sustainable, and transparent.
  • Engaging communities to promote water conservation and encourage people to take part in managing local water systems.
  • Developing strategies to reduce the impact of climate change on water resources, such as promoting water harvesting and responsible usage.

Next Steps

The PURC assured that it will continue to monitor Ghana Water Limited to ensure that water services are reliable, safe, and affordable for all Ghanaians.

“We are committed to working closely with Ghana Water Limited and the government to make sure water services are delivered fairly and sustainably for the benefit of citizens and the economy,” the Commission said in its statement.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is the state agency that oversees the electricity, water, and natural gas sectors in Ghana. Its main goal is to ensure that these essential services are provided efficiently and meet the needs of all consumers.
