The Ashanti Regional Manager of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Edward Boduah, has confirmed that the Commission is working closely with the Electricity Company of Ghana to investigate widespread complaints about prepaid meters allegedly running down unusually fast.
Speaking on Angel FM Kumasi, Mr. Boduah disclosed that the regulator began taking action immediately after receiving multiple complaints from consumers.
“When we started receiving complaints about fast-draining prepaid meters, we picked signals that something was wrong,” he said.
He explained that PURC convened a high-level meeting in Accra with its directorate, which subsequently mandated a full-scale investigation into the issue. Due to the technical complexity of the matter, he noted that the process requires time and collaboration with key institutions, including the Ghana Statistical Service, to support data analysis and validation.
According to him, both ECG and PURC are conducting parallel investigations to ensure transparency and accuracy in determining the root cause of the problem.
“We have established that there are issues, but as to the exact cause, we are still investigating to fully understand it,” he stated.
Mr. Boduah revealed that about 500 customer statements have so far been collected in the Ashanti Region as part of the inquiry, providing a significant data base to guide the investigation.
He assured the public that the process is nearing completion and that the findings will soon be made public.
“We are going to conclude the investigation soon, and the results will be published. Customers will hear from us shortly,” he added.
