Broadcast journalist and morning show host with Wontumi Multimedia, Kwaku Dawuro, has alleged that the long-running tension between Kennedy Agyapong and the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia began after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer reportedly blocked a Ghana Card contract which he sought.

Speaking on his morning show, Dawuro claimed that Agyapong had pushed for the lucrative national identification project to be awarded to an Indian firm, despite the availability of a highly capable Ghanaian company.

“Kennedy Agyapong’s hatred for Bawumia started when he was refused the Ghana Card contract,” Dawuro alleged. “He had gone in for an Indian company to come and do it, while we had a Ghanaian company with even higher expertise.”

According to him, the decision to reject Agyapong’s preferred company was informed by national security concerns and the sensitive nature of the data involved.

“The former president told him that the Ghana Card would carry sensitive national data and be used for most of the transactions in the country, so we could not hand that contract to an external company,” he said. He added that the existence of a competent local firm made the case for foreign outsourcing even weaker.

Dawuro further asserted that this disagreement marked the beginning of Agyapong’s resentment toward the Vice President and contributed to his decision to contest for the NPP’s presidential candidacy.

“This is why he hates Dr. Bawumia and even decided to contest him,” he said.
