The Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has warned landlords against renting out apartments or shops to foreigners who do not possess valid residence permits, stressing that the practice is illegal under Ghana’s housing regulations.

Speaking on Angel FM, Mr. Opoku stated that some landlords deliberately rent their properties to foreigners without verifying their legal status because they are willing to pay higher rents.

“It is illegal to rent an apartment or shop to foreigners who have no residence permit,” he said.

He cautioned that landlords who engage in such practices risk facing legal consequences.

“All the landlords who give their rooms to foreigners because they pay bigger without the residence permit are all candidates for prison,” he warned.

Mr. Opoku further revealed that authorities are preparing to intensify enforcement through a nationwide operation involving several state institutions.

“We are about to do a national joint operation in collaboration with the immigration, GRA and rent control,” he disclosed.

According to him, the move is intended to ensure that landlords comply with the law and that all tenants occupying rented properties in the country have the appropriate legal documentation.

He emphasized that the enforcement exercise will be carried out without political bias, stressing that the law applies equally to everyone regardless of political affiliation.

“We should abide by the laws to be safe. Our laws do not have political colours, whether you’re an NPP or an NDC, we will arrest you if we find you guilty,” he stated.

Mr. Opoku concluded by reiterating that his responsibility is strictly to enforce the law and ensure compliance within the rental sector.

“My work is to enforce the law, I do not know NDC and NPP,” he added.
