Rev. Manasseh Oboabisa has predicted that President John Dramani Mahama will serve an additional year in office but will not seek or be granted another full presidential term.
Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, the clergyman said President Mahama is likely to remain in office for a total of five years instead of the constitutionally mandated four, following the possible adoption of a proposed constitutional amendment.
According to Rev. Oboabisa, the proposal to introduce a five-year presidential term will gain approval in Parliament, effectively extending President Mahama’s current tenure by one year.
“Mahama will go for an additional year, so he will spend five years in office, not another term,” he stated. “The five-year term being advocated for will be accepted in Parliament.”
He explained that the extension would not require a fresh mandate through elections in 2028, predicting instead that the next general election would be held in 2029.
“We will not vote in 2028; we will vote in 2029,” he said.
Rev. Oboabisa further suggested that public satisfaction with President Mahama’s performance could fuel support for the extension.
“Many people would want Mahama to continue because he has done well,” he noted.
However, he dismissed suggestions that such an arrangement would disadvantage the New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that the extra time could actually work in the party’s favour.
“It will never be at the disadvantage of the NPP. By 2029, the NPP would have regained its lost strength,” he added.
