National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has called for recognition of his party’s efforts in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Mr. Gyamfi argued that despite political differences, the NDC has demonstrated genuine commitment to ending the menace, which continues to devastate Ghana’s forests, rivers, and farmlands.
“We deserve some plaudits and support for the commitment we have shown in the fight against galamsey,” he stated, insisting that the NDC’s policy proposals and advocacy on the issue prove the party’s resolve to safeguard the environment.
He emphasized that the fight against illegal mining should not be reduced to partisan politics but treated as a collective national effort. “The fight against galamsey should not be about political point-scoring. It should be about securing the future of our children, protecting our water bodies, and ensuring food security,” he added.
Environmentalists have welcomed the call for nonpartisan collaboration but maintain that what Ghanaians need is sustained enforcement, transparency in mining concessions, and protection for whistleblowers who expose illegal operations.
