At least a dozen passengers have sustained various degrees of injuries after a 15-seater minibus was involved in a road crash on the Accra, Aflao Highway, near Awalavi in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region.

The accident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, involved a vehicle with registration number GT 5645-21, reportedly travelling at top speed from Accra to Aflao when it lost control and rammed into a pavement barrier along the stretch.

According to eyewitness Emmanuel Awudza, the incident happened moments after a loud tyre burst was heard.

“I was on my rice farm near the road when I heard a loud bang. Suddenly, the vehicle veered off its lane and crashed into the pavement. The driver was speeding and couldn’t control the car after the back tyre burst,” he told the Ghana News Agency.

Mr. Awudza added that the driver and several passengers suffered injuries to their heads, arms, and legs, and were quickly rushed by residents to the Weta Hospital for emergency treatment before the police arrived at the scene.

“We must commend the people of Awalavi for their swift response in helping the victims before the Afife Police got there,” he said.

Another passenger, Madam Sandra Mileba, who was travelling from Tema to Aflao, expressed gratitude that there were no fatalities but lamented the loss of valuables, including mobile phones, during the chaos.

“I can’t really tell how the accident happened, but we thank God no one died,” she said.

Residents are calling on authorities to intensify road safety enforcement on the highway, while Mr. Awudza appealed to drivers to exercise caution, especially during nighttime and early morning hours.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
