Nearly 600,000 first-year students are reporting to various Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country today, marking the official start of the 2025/2026 academic year.
The atmosphere across lorry terminals and school campuses was filled with excitement and mild anxiety as parents and guardians escorted their wards to school, many carrying trunks and chop boxes packed with the required items for boarding life.
At several schools, fresh students were seen going through registration, health screening, and accommodation processes, while parents interacted with teachers and administrators to ensure a smooth transition.
A few schools, including Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) at Legon and Mawuli School in the Volta Region, have deferred their reopening dates. PRESEC is undertaking fumigation exercises to prepare the environment for the new students, while Mawuli School is rounding up activities marking its 75th anniversary celebration before admitting freshers.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reassured parents and guardians that all placed students will be admitted, stressing that the placement process under the Free SHS policy guarantees access for every qualified candidate.
As the new academic year begins, thousands of families are hopeful that their children’s SHS journey will open new doors of learning and opportunity.
