Political analyst Sir Yaw Nimako has responded to recent findings by Sanity Africa on Angel FM Kumasi, insisting that the loss of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections cannot be pinned solely on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“The reason for their loss starts from the grassroots. The work that people were supposed to do wasn’t done. Individuals were tasked, but they failed to deliver,” Sir Nimako said.
He explained that many party supporters focused more on short-term monetary incentives than on long-term party objectives. “People often focus on the monies politicians bring. After collecting the money, they forget everything and sometimes even vote against them,” he noted.
Sir Nimako urged the NPP to critically assess how leaders are selected and how grassroots structures operate. “Most people are money-conscious and want only their family members on boards, which is not the right approach,” he said.
He recounted an example of a woman who was denied party membership close to the elections, preventing her from voting. “These are the kinds of grassroots issues that contributed to the loss,” he emphasized.
Clarifying his position, he said, “I am not defending Dr. Bawumia or campaigning for him. I am just stating the truth. Leaders from the grassroots up to the national executives must take responsibility if the party is to succeed in the next election.”
He further pointed out that internal party challenges, including pride, poor communication, and lack of discipline among leaders, also played a role in the party’s defeat. “If they address these issues, the NPP will be better positioned moving forward,” Sir Nimako concluded.
