Six people, including a baby under one year old, were injured after stray bullets hit them during a celebratory shooting at Kwabenakwa in the Obuasi East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The incident happened shortly after a court ruled on a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in favour of one of the rival families.

Following the verdict, some jubilant supporters reportedly moved through the community in a Pragyia (tricycle), firing gunshots into the air to celebrate. One of them, identified as Kofi Cole, is alleged to have fired several shots, some of which hit six innocent residents, including the infant.

Eyewitnesses said the unexpected gunfire caused panic as residents ran for safety. The victims were later rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Assembly Member for Kwabenakwa, Charles Abu, described it as “a tragic act of reckless celebration that nearly cost innocent lives.”

Police have launched investigations into the matter, and calm has since been restored to the community.
