The Central Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Kojo Sekyere Koi Thompson, has directed all NHIS-accredited health facilities in the region to immediately stop charging unauthorized fees to subscribers.
He issued the warning during a stakeholder meeting in Dunkwa-on-Offin, Upper Denkyira East Municipality, held under the theme: “Attaining Universal Health Coverage: A Collective Responsibility.”
Mr. Koi Thompson emphasised that imposing illegal charges on NHIS members undermines the government’s efforts to ensure equitable access to healthcare. “Service providers who breach NHIA regulations will be identified through our monitoring mechanisms and sanctioned accordingly,” he said.
The Regional Director further instructed NHIS district offices to strengthen oversight and promptly report any facilities engaging in unlawful practices. He also urged subscribers to report illegal charges at their district offices to promote transparency, accountability, and high-quality healthcare delivery.
Meanwhile, Isaac Bofah, NHIS District Manager for Upper Denkyira, highlighted network challenges as a key operational hurdle. He explained that poor internet connectivity in some communities limits the team’s ability to register residents during outreach programmes.
Mr. Bofah appealed for an offline-compatible registration system to allow continuous NHIS enrolment even in areas with unstable network access.
