Security forces in Tamale have arrested 32 individuals and confiscated large quantities of suspected drugs during a targeted operation in the metropolis on Monday, December 1. The operation also left one armed suspect dead after a shootout with police.
Led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, the Special Operations Team began the day with a visit to Masjidul Bayan, where they met with the mosque leader, Sheikh Basha. The visit was both a courtesy call and a way to seek blessings for a smooth and safe operation.
“We are committed to tackling robbery, attacks on mobile money vendors, sexual assault, drug-related offences, and other crimes that threaten public safety,” ASP Jalil said during the visit. Sheikh Basha praised the police for their efforts and promised continuous prayers for the safety and success of the nation’s security personnel.
Following the mosque visit, the team proceeded to Sanzhirigu, where a residence reportedly being used as a drug den was raided. Five suspects were arrested, and authorities seized dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, along with bottles of Koffex cough syrup.
The operation expanded to the Aboabo Forest area, a known hub for criminal gangs involved in robbery and narcotics trafficking. A coordinated raid in the forest led to the arrest of 27 additional suspects. Officers also recovered suspected narcotics, opioid tablets, six motorbikes, and three mobile phones believed to have been stolen.
The operation escalated when armed individuals confronted the officers. Police say the suspects fired on the team “without warning,” prompting officers to return fire in self-defence. One suspect was critically injured and later pronounced dead at Tamale Teaching Hospital.
ASP Jalil emphasized that the team’s actions were necessary to counter a clear and imminent threat. “Our officers demonstrated professionalism under extremely dangerous circumstances and prevented further harm to residents,” he said.
All arrested suspects are currently in police custody at the District Charge Office and Sakasaka Police Station. Confiscated drugs have been submitted for forensic examination, while the motorbikes and phones are held for further investigation.
The 50-member Special Operations Team, supported by eight service vehicles including a Black Maria, plans to continue similar operations in the metropolis to address rising violent crimes across the Northern Region.
