The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has begun a bold operation to clear unauthorised structures choking the city’s spaces.

Led by MCE Ebi Bright, the move targets structures near schools, hospitals, security installations, and utility corridors, which have been declared no-go zones for temporary setups.

During Saturday’s National Sanitation Day, TMA teams, backed by security officers, swept through electoral areas, demolishing illegal structures and halting commercial transport operations until noon.

Ms Bright stressed that the exercise is backed by Act 936, Act 925, and TMA by-laws, saying it’s not about punishment but fairness, safety, and restoring Tema’s dignity as a modern industrial city.

“We value the right to trade and work,” she said, “but lawlessness cannot destroy our city. Tema must grow in an organised and orderly way.”

The Assembly is also rolling out a regularisation plan to protect traders’ livelihoods while maintaining order. Assembly Members will lead community engagements to explain the process.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Director John Nana Owu admitted that public apathy remains a challenge due to limited engagement but promised stronger stakeholder communication in future clean-ups.

Both officials urged residents to take ownership of their environment, keeping Tema clean, safe, and sustainable.
