Tension erupted at the Kasarani Stadium today as thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The atmosphere, initially solemn and orderly, quickly turned chaotic when delays in the commencement of the body viewing sparked frustration among attendees.

Eyewitnesses reported that the restless crowd began chanting and demanding explanations from organisers after waiting several hours under the scorching sun. The situation escalated when a section of mourners attempted to force their way into the VIP area, where dignitaries and close family members were seated.

Security personnel responded swiftly, firing tear gas and warning shots to control the agitated crowd and prevent a full-scale stampede. Several people were seen coughing and retreating as police regained control of the scene.

No serious injuries have been reported so far, but some mourners were treated on-site for minor respiratory distress following exposure to the tear gas.

Officials from the funeral committee later apologised for the delay, citing “unforeseen logistical challenges” in coordinating the arrival of high-profile guests and the movement of the hearse into the stadium.

Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics and democracy, passed away earlier this month after decades of shaping the nation’s political landscape. The public viewing forms part of a week-long state funeral programme, which will culminate in his burial at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County.

Despite the temporary chaos, thousands remained at the venue to pay their last respects, chanting slogans in honour of the man many affectionately called “Baba.”
